I realize that C# and vbasic are used with the .net compact framework.

I also realize that many people have tons of experience in C++.

If a developer were starting now, are there times when they would need c++ instead of C# and vbasic??

If you have a need for real-time, deterministic behavior for all or part of your application, then the only way to ensure that is to use unmanaged C/C++ for at least those portions of your application.
