We are using the Bitsy-X platform for our application. We disable the CE shell in our product, as we manage the display ourselves.

When we call GetTimeZoneInformation(), it returns TIME_ZONE_ID_STANDARD. It should be returning TIME_ZONE_ID_DAYLIGHT at the present day. If we start the CE shell, then start out application, GetTimeZoneInformation() returns TIME_ZONE_ID_DAYLIGHT as it should.

The Microsoft forum indicates that "when the OS boots, Filesys.exe makes a call to the GetTimeZoneInformation function to set time zone information for the OS". Perhaps this is invoked as part of the CE shell start-up?

So... we're wondering what we can do to get the OS to use the appropriate time zone information without having to invoke the CE shell?

Thanks,
Jim C.

You are correct that the CE desktop shell manages the changeover to Daylight Saving Time (DST). If you disable the CE desktop, you'll need to manage that functionality in your application.

Where applicable in the United States, DST goes into effect the first Sunday in April and ends the last Sunday in October. The rules for DST in the US are described on this NIST web page.

2007 Update for USA: In 2007, US daylight savings time will run 3-4 weeks longer than in years previous. It will begin the second Sunday in March (2-3 weeks earlier) and will end the first Sunday in November (one week later).

For details about DST in other parts of the world (where it is sometimes called "Summer Time"), and a more detailed history of this time shift, see this WebExhibits.org page about the topic.

Edited by akidder 2-Aug-2007: Add detail about change in US DST standard for 2007. Update NIST link; old link was broken (http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/general/daylightsavingtime.html).
