Question using RS-232 cable 610110-4004B with GM:
Pin-out in GM manual for 2x5 header is as follows: 1 - dcd 2 - dsr 3 - rxd 4 - rts 5 - txd 6 - cts 7 - dtr 8 - n/c 9 - gnd 10- n/c
The cable pin-out is as follows: 1 - no connection (n/c) 2 - n/c 3 - pin 2 of DB-9M 4 - pin 7 of DB-9M 5 - pin 3 of DB-9M 6 - pin 8 of DB-9M 7 - n/c 8 - pin 9 of DB-9M - ?? 9 - pin 5 of DB-9M 10- n/c
What is the purpose of IDC 8 to DB-9M pin 9?? Is this only for strain relief of the ground conductor, DB-9 pin 5??

#Serial 3 Loopback
Hi Joel. The short answer is that the 4004A cable is designed for quick assembly, and there are a number of pins that are unused in it. You don't need to connect them in your own cable.
Here's the longer answer...
The 610110-4004A cable is used to convert the J10:Serial_3, 2x5 header of the GC Plus, GMaster and other products to a DB9 connector suitable for use with standard serial ports.
Only a few of the ten pins on the 2x5 header are actively used by the GC Plus and GMaster. Four are signals, three are loopbacks, two are unconnected and one is ground. You may connect as few as three wires to create a valid RS-232 serial cable.
The pinout for the 2x5 socket was designed to simplify cable assembly. You can quickly crimp IDC and DB9 plugs onto a nine-pin ribbon cable to create the 4004A cable.
Its cousin, the 4004B (below) includes a loopback of DTR, DSR and DCD to the PC for use with CE ActiveSync, which increases the complexity of cable construction. Take a look at this cable drawing for the low-down on which signals are connected by the cable.

The following 2x5 IDC connectors can be used to create the 610110-4004B cable:
AMP #746285-1, BERG #66900-310, ADM #FCS10SG.
Equivalent crimp-and-poke connectors may be used as well. |
