ABSTRACT

Random vibration and shock tests were conducted on two different ADS computers: the ADS Graphics Master, and the ADS Bitsy. Following the shock testing, the boards each underwent an accelerated, random vibration test designed to simulate the lifetime rigors that the boards are expected to experience in the field. Both boards successfully passed both the shock and vibration testing.

The purpose of these tests is to assist in the qualification of these two boards for field use. The environmental testing was conducted by CALCE EPSC and consisted of accelerated shock and vibration testing on a Ling Dynamic Systems electro-dynamic shaker table (model LDS826LS), to approximate and simulate the rigors that the board will experience during its expected life. In designing these tests to simulate a lifetime, Mil-Std-810E and SAE J1211 standards on the recommended environmental practices were consulted.

CALCE used Mil-Std-810E, sections 514 and 516 dealing with shock and vibration testing, respectively, to develop tests for components to be operated in a "composite wheeled vehicle." This profile was chosen to approximate use in a large, earth-moving tractor—one of the more demanding applications of the ADS board. Also, two different automotive profiles were examined and compared to the profile described in Mil-Std-810E.

These various profiles were compared, and it will be shown that although the testing was designed for an off-road vehicle, the severity of the tests conducted far exceeds those outlined for a standard automotive environment. Thus since boards passed the more severe test, there was no need to test at a less severe level.
