I have been trying to establish which USB2.0 chipset is being used on the Sphere board.

It was strange to find that the board only runs at FullSpeed 12Mbps (which is the top USB 1.1 speed) and does not run at USB2.0 High Speed.
This is at odds to other EP9315 SBC boards which have USB2.0 High Speed. It's odd to find a new board not supporting High Speed.

Is it a single chip replacement to go to USB2.0 high speed a software change or a whole board redesign ?

The Sphere board was optimized for low cost so it uses the EP9315 internal Host controller. The EP9315 USB Host controller, according to the data sheets, is capable of low speed 1.2Mbps and full speed 12Mbps.
