Debian Installer 2008-10-24 (armel)

Debian Ramdisk (armel) 2008-10-24 is a version of the Debian installer that can be used to install pure Debian armel or Debian armel with EuroTech modifications onto EuroTech boards. This installer can be used if you would like to install a newer version of Debian than EuroTech has released, or if you want to fully customise your Debian installation.

This image is based on and installs the armel port of Debian, which uses EABI.

EABI is a new application binary interface (ABI) for Linux that offers performance improvements over the old ABI through use of softfloat instructions for floating point arithmetic, a more efficient syscall convention, and the option to use VFP hardware if the CPU has it. See the EABI FAQ for details.

While EABI has its advantages, this release is not as well tested or as stable as the regular Debian arm system.

We do not recommend that most users use this method to install Debian, since it is quicker and less failure prone to use our prepackaged Debian root filesystem. See this forum post for details.

Debian will be installed to a USB hard drive connected to the board, and all contents of the USB drive will be erased by the install.

The following files are included in this release:
700050-41154.partno
MD5SUMS
README.txt
cmdline.txt
cmdline_bitsyx.txt
install_config.txt
ramdisk.gz
root_config.txt

Usage
To use it, download the ramdisk.gz image from the link above and copy it to an ATA flash card. Also copy onto the card, the kernel zImage file for the kernel you want to use. Note that you must use an EABI version of the kernel, such as the one provided here. This README.txt file provides more information on using the installer.

On the BitsyX, use this cmdline.txt.

On AGX, GCX and VGX, use this cmdline.txt.

To install Debian without EuroTech additions, in a fully interactive mode, edit the cmdline.txt file and remove everything from "preseed/url" on to the end of the line.

Boot the system from compact flash and proceed with the first stage of installation. If you are installing Debian with EuroTech additions, this installation process should be completely noninteractive. If you are not you will need to answer the normal questions related to a Debian installation.

After installation is complete, remove the compact flash and replace the cmdline.txt file with the cmdline.txt files needed to boot Debian from a hard drive. The files can be downloaded from the Full Debian Distribution (armel) 2007-08-27 release. Consult the README.txt from that release for details and additional information about using Debian on EuroTech boards.

Verification
MD5SUMS provides MD5 checksums for all files in this release.

History
This is an updated release of our Debian based installer for armel. The previous, 2008-04-22, release no longer works.
