Eurotech provides instructions for installing and using Linux distributions and BSD operating systems on the Catalyst, but does not provide free direct support for using the Catalyst in this way. These instructions are intended to help you install this distribution in the most appropriate way for this hardware, and to help you with common problems involved in using a this distribution on the Catalyst. If you need other support with a Linux distribution, we recommend using the distrubution's own support channels.
PC-BSD is an easy-to-use FreeBSD-based operating system for the desktop. For more information on PC-BSD, see the PC-BSD Guide.
In order to install PC-BSD, you will need a USB stick of at least 2 gigabytes in size, which will be used to boot the PC-USB installer. Prepare this USB stick as follows: - Visit http://www.pcbsd.org/
- Click on the "Download" link.
- Download the "PC-BSD USB 32bit" image.
- Write this image to the 2 gigabyte USB stick, overwriting the existing partitions on the USB stick. For example, if using a Linux or BSD system to write the image, run the command
dd if=PCBSD7.1.1-x86-USB-bootonly.img of=X , with X replaced with the appropriate device name for the USB stick.
Installation to external USB disk: - Attach the 2 gigabyte USB stick to the Catalyst. Connect it to the USB port located directly below the ethernet port.
- Also attach a USB hard drive (or a USB memory stick that is 8 GB or larger), which PC-BSD will be installed to. Connect it to the USB port located to the left of the port used for the USB stick.
- Attach to the Catalyst's VGA port an external monitor with a resolution of at least 1024x768. This is necessary during the installation process to see the entire display, which will not fit on the LCD panel.
- Attach a keyboard, mouse, and ethernet.
- Power on the Catalyst.
- At the PC-BSD boot menu, press the Space Bar to pause the automatic boot timer.
- Then select option 2, to boot with ACPI disabled. (This avoids a crash during boot.)
- Step through the installation process.
- In the "Drive selection" screen, select the USB hard drive that you connected earlier (it should be da0), and check "Use entire disk". Note that all information on this drive will be erased by the installer.
- Finish the installation process.
- When prompted, remove the 2 gigabyte USB stick that was used to run the install process, and Reboot into PC-BSD.
- At the boot menu, again select option 2, to boot with ACPI disabled. (This avoids a crash during boot.)
- PC-BSD will boot into a graphical desktop.
Known issues:
PC-BSD does not support the Catalyst's touchscreen, so a mouse or other pointing device should be used instead.
