Sphere II User's Manual (rev 1, PDF 1 MB)

The Sphere II is a full-featured single board computer driven by the highly integrated Cirrus Logic EP9315 ARM system-on-chip processor. Among other features, the EP9315 supports Ethernet, USB, EIDE, LCD displays and includes a floating point math engine optimized for digital music compression and decompression.

The Sphere II is the successor to the ADS Sphere product. The Sphere II adds a battery for the real-time clock and surface mount headers, which slightly increased the size of the Sphere II over the original Sphere.

The Sphere is designed to meet the needs of embedded and graphical systems developers whose applications require low power, a small form factor and an aggressive price point.

Erratum: J12 (USB, I2C, SSP, CAN, IrDA)

MISO/MOSI pin connections are incorrect in rev 1 of the Sphere II user manual. They should be flipped and therefore the pin connections are:

J12.31 = MISO
J12.32 = MOSI

    Addendum: JP6 and JP7 for EIA-485/422

    While section 3.3.6 in the manual describes the setting of jumpers JP6 and JP7 for EIA-485, those settings should work for EIA-422. EIA-485 is currently not supported on Sphere II.

    Note: SLA[1:0] Not Available as GPIOs

    Sections 3.4.12 and 4.5.1 of the manual mention that pins J12.33 and J12.34 or SLA[1:0] can be used as GPIO pins. However, this is not currently supported in Sphere CE software. You can find a listing of the GPIO bit to signal map for Sphere on topic 1788.

    Addendum: Sphere Inrush Current

    The Sphere II draws a 3.3V inrush current of 1.75 to 2.25 amps at boot.

    Eurotech recommends to use a power supply than can provide 3.3V at 3A for at least 2ms to ensure reliable boot of the Sphere board. If you have a 3.3V LCD display connected, increase the power supply capacity accordingly.

    Clarification: Sphere Production Options, LVDS

    The Sphere II can be built with a a number of production options, which are outlined in the Sphere user manual. Development systems ship with most features supported (e.g. RTC, CAN bus, four-wire touch panel, and EIA-232 serial ports).

    LVDS support is a production option, and requires different CPLD code to sequence the display. It is not included in standard Sphere configurations. Please discuss any LVDS requirements with your sales representative before ordering.
