[ Note: see the Root File Systems topic for the latest full Debian release. ]
For the BitsyX and AGX, a debian root file system with installation script and instructions is available in this tarfile and md5 checksum. (Note this is a 200Mbyte file - to download and untar this file you will temporarilly need over 400Mbyes of free space on a unix system.)
This debian release requires a 1Gbyte or larger Hitachi Microdrive which must be placed in the PCMCIA or CF slot. This drive is configured with 3 partitions. The first partition holds the kernel zImage, cmdline.txt, register.txt (if used), and ramdisk.gz (which is used as an initrd). The second partition is the swap space. The third partition is the debian root file system. The microdrive can be purchased for less than $200 at several sites on the web. (Note that the Microdrive is a rotating disk drive, not a flash device. It is less expensive than a flash device with generally better performance. Flash devices are not suitable for swapping.)
Debian includes thousands of precompiled packages that can be downloaded with the 'apt-get' command. Amoung those packages are compilers and other development tools including debuggers. With Debian, there is no need for cross compilers for building applications.
