Q. What's the simplest way to run a single X application?

Here is an example (using Debian):

xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -geo 40x20 -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xfbdev &

This will start an xterm. No window manager will be started and the touch screen calibration will not be loaded.

To load the touch screen calibration (and to re-calibrate if the file /etc/X11/xcalibrate/xcalibrate.conf is missing) run this shell script after X is running:

/etc/X11/xcalibrate/xcalibrate.sh
