Eurotech provides instructions for installing and using several Linux distributions on the Catalyst, but does not provide free direct support for using the Catalyst in this way. These instructions are intended to help you install this distribution in the most appropriate way for this hardware, and to help you with common problems involved in using a this distribution on the Catalyst. If you need other support with a Linux distribution, we recommend using the distrubution's own support channels.
Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) is a version of the standard Ubuntu Desktop release modified to enable it to work better on netbooks or devices with small screens and is optimized for use with the Intel Atom processor.
In order to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR), you will need a USB stick of at least 1 gigabyte in size, which will be used to boot the Ubuntu installer.
Visit http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook and download the image from that page. Follow the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles to write the image to the flash drive.
Ubuntu Netbook Remix can be tried without further installation, or can be installed to a external USB hard drive.
Trying UNR without further installation: - Attach the USB stick to the Catalyst.
- Attach a keyboard and mouse.
- Power on the Catalyst and follow the prompts to try UNR without installation.
- UNR will boot into a desktop environment.
Note that when UNR is booted in this way, it may run somewhat slowly. This is because it is running from an emulated CD image inside a (probably slow) USB memory stick. For a faster desktop, install UNR to disk instead.
Installation to external USB disk: - Attach the USB stick containing UNR to the Catalyst.
- Attach a keyboard and mouse.
- Power on the Catalyst and in the menu choose the option to install UNR to disk.
- In order to work around a problem with the installer's detection of USB disks, do not attach the USB disk you plan to install to until the installer has finished booting and presents you with a "Welcome" screen.
- Attach a USB disk drive (or large USB memory stick). Note that all information on this drive will be erased by the installer.
- Answer installation questions.
- When you are asked which disk to install to, choose "Use the Entire Disk" and select the USB disk you plan to install to.
- After the installation completes, the installer will prompt you to restart. Remove the USB stick that was used to boot the UNR installer and choose "Ok".
- UNR will boot into a desktop environment.
Known issues:
UNR does not support the Catalyst's touchscreen. In order to use the touchscreen, a third-party driver is needed. This topic describes how to obtain, install, and use the touch screen driver.
If the Catalyst is suspended using UNR's GUI, there is no known way to resume. |
