Q: I see some corrosion on the contacts of my connector. Is this normal?
The primary cause of corrosion in electronic connectors is from contact of dissimilar metals. When selecting mating connectors, make sure that the plating is the same as the header to which it connects. Connectors made for regular insertions (keyboard, USB, PCMCIA, CF, Ethernet, etc) are typically gold plated. Others are usually tin plated.
Complete part numbers (which include plating information) are listed in ADS user manuals and on mechanical drawings.
Corrosion is accelerated on connectors that have higher currents. It is especially important to match the plating on power and display connectors.
