Q: Is 4-bit color supported by Windows CE?

Yes. The Windows CE display drivers for 8-bit color can also support 4-bit color and gray-scale panels. If you have a 4-bit panel, CE uses only the first sixteen entries in the 8-bit (256-entry) palette. If you set the PaletteReverse registry key to 1, CE uses the last 16 entries in the 8-bit palette (#255 is entry 0, 254 is entry 1, etc). As with all panels, you will have to arrange with ADS to configure your system for that panel.

Is CE then 'optimized'? It would seem to me that sending out twice as much data then needed would cause unnessacary overhead. Is there anyway to indicate to CE that you only need 4-bit data?

Hi Jason. The StrongARM does support 4 bpp displays, but CE doesn't. The 8 bpp solution is a workaround that a number of our production customers are currently using successfully.

You are correct that the data bus bandwidth requirement for 8bpp vs 4bpp, it is, in fact, double what it needs to be. However, it's still a small proportion of the total system bus bandwidth. Most 4 bpp displays are typically QVGA or smaller and require fairly low refresh rates.

If you're curious, you can calculate the bandwidth requirements for your display using the details at the display bandwidth topic we recently posted on our forums. I hope this helps.
