Q. Can CE be built to support specific languages?
Yes. ADS creates its standard CE builds for English, but has also created builds to support specific languages.
Application-Level Language Support
There are several ways to support other languages under Windows CE that may not require a language-specific build:- Use language-specific libraries (e.g. MFC) for the application;
- Use third-party language support;
- Install fonts for the specific language.
If a Custom Build is Needed...
We've built CE images for a number of Asian and European languages. If you need a CE build for a production run of systems that is not in English, please email us details about your application requirements. Details we'll need to know include the following:- ADS product;
- The language(s) you want to use;
- Operating system version (CE 3.0, 4.x, etc);
- Type of language support you'll need (listed below in increasing level of complexity):
- Fonts (display information in application),
- Language-specific user text input,
- Language-specific system menus and dialog boxes.
Further Reading
Here are some notes and links about language support under CE:- In CE 3.0, "Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, and Swedish are localized for the operating system, not for applications."

- CE.NET 4.2 currently supports Chinese (simplified and traditional), English, French, German, Japanese and Korean. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/docs/ce.net/FeatComp_WindowsCE4.2.doc
- Microsoft says that CE.NET 4.2 supports nine languages [I count seven, above]:

- Google remembers that Microsoft said Italian and Spanish (and maybe Dutch and Swedish) are also supported:

- We have also integrated third-party Arabic language support from Paragon Software. They sell a "language extender" product for the following languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Greek, Hungarian, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Turkish.
