Q1: I get the following error message after loading a CE image that was a different size than before.
Media not formatted !
Formatting Flash Disk...
VBF Format failed!
Q2: I can't get my system to boot after I loaded a CE image that was a different size than before.
Both these errors may occur when the flash disk doesn't properly reformat after you change the size of the CE image stored in onboard flash. Try erasing the region of flash in which the flash disk resides.
The following is no longer recommended, but is retained for reference. Try using the erasefxdisk application first. - August 2001
You can use the CE bootloader menu to erase (low level format) the portion of flash dedicated to the flash disk. This will force the flash disk driver to reformat the flash the next time CE boots (high level format).
- Boot the system to the bootload menu (switch 3 ON, others off) with a terminal connected to the debug port.
- Select the option to erase flash (option 5).
- Select the option to erase by block.
- Enter the address range to erase.
To erase just the flash disk, use the range defined in the ADSLOAD.REG file (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\FlashFx key).
Eg. 1: Erase only the flash disk region, 10 MB CE image, GC Plus or Master:
Start address = B00000 (10MB CE + 1MB system region)
End address = 1000000 (2000000 if 32MB flash)
Eg. 2: Erase all onboard flash, GC Plus or Master:
Start address = 0
Ending address = 1000000 (2000000 for 32MB onboard flash)
Note: You must reload CE image and configuration files after erasing flash.
The ADS flash memory map may be of additional help in understanding where the flash disk resides.
- Wait for the loader menu to reappear.
- Set the board to boot CE (switch 1 and 3 ON, others off) and reboot the system. During the boot sequence, the debug port should indicate that the flash is being reformatted. This takes 15-60 seconds, depending on the size of the flash disk.
