Q: Can the StrongARM generate non-standard baud rates?

Yes. ADS systems include a 3.6864MHz clock that the StrongARM divides by 16 and then by an integer divisor to achieve the target baud rate (e.g. 3.6864M/16/6 = 38400 baud).

However, note that the standard Windows CE serial driver has only a selection of the most common baud rates to choose from. If you need a specific baud rate that CE doesn't support, contact ADS Sales; ADS may have to write a CE driver to support the baud rate you need.

The Graphics Master quad UART uses the same frequency divider and crystal as the StrongARM. It too would require a custom driver for non-standard baud rates.

The XScale PXA255 uses a 14.7456 MHz base clock for its UARTs, which is four times faster than the StrongARM.

This allows a peak baud rate of 921.6 kbps on the XScale (14.7/16/1) and gives improved resolution for non-standard baud rates at lower speeds.
