The following table provides a quick illustration of how the EIA-232, RS-422, RS-485, and J1708 are typically wired.
The two-wire configurations require that transmitters be disabled after sending.
The J1708 standard includes a higher layer that specifies how collisions are detected, and a randomized re-transmission delay based on the priority of the message/transmitter.
Full-duplex RS-485 networks can be configured in many ways, including a single transmitter on one pair and multiple nodes that can respond on the other pair.
