Q: How can I use ActiveSync with Ethernet?

The following instructions describe how to connect using ActiveSync over Ethernet. For a quicker Ethernet debugging setup (no ActiveSync serial connection required), you might consider using TCP/IP Ethernet debugging.

1. Add Ethernet settings to your ADSLOAD.REG file (see the ADS CE Developer's Guide for details). For the WINS entry, use the IP address of the host computer. Note that you must enter the WINS entry even if you are using DHCP.

2. Create an ActiveSync partnership over a serial cable using the steps outlined above. You must select "Yes" when prompted if you want to create a partnership, and must fully complete the synchronization process before proceeding to the next step.

3. Disconnect the partnership by closing the Repllog session on your CE device (tap the icon in the system tray, then select Disconnect). You may also disconnect the serial cable at this time, if desired.

4. Run "Repllog /remote".

5. You will be prompted for the connection method and device to connect to. Use "Network Connection" and the network name of the host computer you are connecting to.

Repllog will check for the partnership you created with the desktop PC, then will synchronize files. If the connection is successful, the "Connection Status" dialog box will report that it is connected and "Up-to-date".

For more about ActiveSync on ADS products, see the ActiveSync topic index.

We use Ethernet for our application. Do we need to install another Ethernet port for use with Ethernet ActiveSync?
Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill. No need to install another card. Unlike serial ports, the Ethernet driver can be used by multiple applications (eg. browse the Internet with IE, read files on the network with Windows Explorer and run a debug session with ActiveSync).
