Q: How can I control a backlight inverter directly from a Bitsy without the use of a Bitsy Personality board?

The Bitsy supplies backlight control signals (on/off and brightness) on J3. The on/off control is an open-collector output with a pull-up to the voltage on pin J3.48. If your backlight inverter doesn't have its own pull-up, connect the inverter supply voltage (V) to J3.48.

The following is a wire table for controlling a backlight inverter directly from the Bitsy:
   Supply Inverter Bitsy
------ ----------- -------
V V (J3.48)
GND GND GND
brightness J3.16
on/off J3.18

Here are some additional details about the Bitsy backlight circuits:

1. Backlight Connection Diagram (PDF 5kB)

This diagram illustrates how to wire a backlight with and without a Bitsy Personality Board.

Items of note:
  • If you're not using a Bitsy Personality Board, you must power the backlight directly from the supply.

  • Some backlight inverters operate adequately with only power and ground connected. Others may require that you tie the on/off signal high or low.

  • You may need to supply backlight power to the Bitsy even if you're powering the backlight directly. See the following schematic for details about why.

2. Schematic of BACKLIGHTON Signal

The following diagram illustrates how the Bitsy BACKLIGHTON signal is wired. Standard systems pull up the output to V_BACKLIGHT (listed as +12V_IN in the manual, but which can be any voltage that will work with your backlight).
